What Is Anxiety?

Like depression, anxiety is a normal feeling for people to have occasionally. Occasionally is the active word here. For example you might feel anxious or nervous before you take a test, or perform at a music or dance recital, or have a meeting with a boss. These feelings of anxiety are usually dealt with, without too much of a problem. For some however, anxiety causes great distress and effects their daily lives making functioning difficult. Social anxiety, panic, phobias and generalized anxiety disorders fall under the umbrella of anxiety and can include the following symptoms:

  • Feelings of panic
  • Fear and uneasiness
  • Problems sleeping
  • Cold or sweaty hands and/or feet
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations
  • An inability to be still and calm
  • Dry mouth
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
  • Nausea
  • Muscle tension
  • Dizziness
